Wally R. Smith, MD, is the first Florence Neal Cooper Smith Professor of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) at Virginia Commonwealth University. He directs the VCU Adult Sickle Cell Medical Home. He also serves as the Vice Chairman for Research in VCU’s Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Smith is best known as the Principal Investigator of the landmark Pain in Sickle Cell Epidemiology Study (PiSCES, R01 HL64122), the largest and most detailed adult cohort study of SCD pain. He is now a member of NIH’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative Multi-disciplinary Working Group. He has authored over 130 publications, served as an investigator on over 55 externally funded grants and contracts, and mentored scores of now-successful researchers in SCD. He is Pl of likely the first-ever randomized controlled trial of implementation science in SCD, Start Healing in Patients with Hydroxyurea (SHiP HU, R18HL112737). Dr. Smith also participated the now-published evidence-based classification systems for acute and chronic SCD pain.
